Aircon Not Cold? 7 Common Causes and Fixes
Why your AC is running but the room is not cooling down
There are few things more frustrating in Bangkok than coming home to an aircon that blows air but does not cool. It is 35 degrees outside, you are sweating, and your AC seems to be doing absolutely nothing. Before you panic and call for an emergency replacement, know that most causes are fixable - and some you can diagnose yourself.
Here are the seven most common reasons your aircon is not cold, ranked from the easiest to fix to the most serious.
1. Dirty Filters and Coils
How common: This is the number one cause. We estimate 40-50% of "my aircon is not cold" calls are solved by cleaning.
What happens: Dust, pet hair, and Bangkok pollution clog your filters, restricting airflow. Dirty evaporator coils cannot absorb heat efficiently. The aircon runs but the cooling output drops significantly.
The fix: You can wash the filters yourself with water. For the coils, you need professional aircon cleaning. After cleaning, most people notice a dramatic improvement immediately.
2. Low Refrigerant (Gas Leak)
How common: About 20-25% of not-cooling issues.
What happens: Refrigerant is the substance that actually carries heat out of your room. If your system has a leak, the refrigerant level drops and cooling capacity decreases. You might notice ice forming on the indoor or outdoor unit.
The fix: A technician needs to find and repair the leak, then refill the refrigerant to the correct pressure. Simply refilling without fixing the leak means it will happen again in weeks.
3. Incorrect Temperature or Mode Settings
How common: More than you think. About 10% of calls.
What happens: The aircon is set to "Fan Only" mode instead of "Cool" mode. Or the temperature is set higher than the room temperature. Sometimes a child or cleaning person accidentally changes the settings via the remote.
The fix: Check your remote. Make sure it is on "Cool" mode (snowflake icon) and the temperature is set below the current room temperature. Also check that the remote batteries are not dead - a weak signal can send incorrect commands.
4. Blocked or Restricted Airflow
How common: About 5-10% of cases.
What happens: Furniture, curtains, or objects are blocking the indoor or outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is in an enclosed space with no ventilation. Hot air cannot escape from the condenser, so the system cannot cool effectively.
The fix: Ensure nothing is within 30cm of the indoor unit vents. Check the outdoor unit - it needs at least 50cm of clear space on all sides for airflow. Remove any covers or obstructions.
5. Faulty Compressor
How common: About 10-15% of cases, more common in older units.
What happens: The compressor is the heart of the cooling system. When it fails or weakens, the unit blows air but cannot compress the refrigerant, so no cooling occurs. You might hear clicking sounds as the compressor tries and fails to start.
The fix: This requires professional diagnosis and repair. Compressor replacement is expensive - sometimes it makes more sense to replace the entire unit depending on its age.
6. Frozen Evaporator Coil
How common: About 5-10% of cases.
What happens: Ice builds up on the evaporator coil inside the indoor unit. This blocks airflow completely. Common causes include low refrigerant, dirty filters (reducing airflow over the coil), or a malfunctioning fan motor.
The fix: Turn off the aircon and let the ice melt completely (2-4 hours). Then address the root cause: clean the filters, check refrigerant levels, or have the fan motor inspected. Running the unit while frozen makes the problem worse.
7. Electrical or PCB Board Failure
How common: About 5% of cases.
What happens: The printed circuit board (PCB) controls the aircon's operations. Power surges, which are common in Bangkok during storms, can damage the board. Symptoms include the unit turning on and off randomly, error codes on the display, or the compressor not receiving the signal to start.
The fix: PCB repair or replacement by a qualified technician. Using a surge protector can prevent future damage. This is a repair job that should not be attempted as a DIY project.
When to Call a Professional
You can handle causes 1 (filter cleaning) and 3 (settings check) yourself. For everything else, calling a qualified technician saves you time and prevents further damage. Attempting to fix refrigerant leaks, compressor issues, or electrical problems without proper training and tools often makes things worse.
