Aircon Sizing Guide: What BTU Do You Need?
Get the right size AC for your Bangkok home - not too big, not too small
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, and it measures the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. Choosing the right BTU rating for your room is crucial. Too small and the unit runs non-stop without ever cooling properly. Too big and it short-cycles - turning on and off frequently - which wastes electricity, creates uneven temperatures, and wears out the compressor faster.
In Bangkok, getting the size right is extra important because outdoor temperatures are extreme. Here is how to figure out what you need.
Quick Reference Chart for Bangkok
These figures assume standard 2.5-2.8 meter ceiling height, moderate sun exposure, and normal occupancy:
| Room Size (sqm) | Recommended BTU | Common Room Type |
|---|---|---|
| 10-15 sqm | 9,000 BTU | Small bedroom, study |
| 15-20 sqm | 12,000 BTU | Standard bedroom, small living room |
| 20-30 sqm | 18,000 BTU | Large bedroom, medium living room |
| 30-40 sqm | 24,000 BTU | Large living room, studio apartment |
| 40-55 sqm | 30,000 BTU | Large open-plan living, small office |
| 55-70 sqm | 36,000 BTU | Large office, retail space |
Factors That Affect BTU Requirements
The chart above is a starting point. Several factors specific to Bangkok can push your requirement up or down:
Sun Exposure
A room with floor-to-ceiling windows facing west gets hammered by afternoon sun. This can add 20-30% to your cooling requirement. If your room gets direct afternoon sun, go up one BTU level from the chart. East-facing rooms with morning sun need less additional capacity. North-facing rooms with minimal direct sun can sometimes go down one level.
Floor Level
Top-floor units and penthouses absorb heat through the roof. If you live on the top floor, add 10-15% to your BTU calculation. Ground-floor units surrounded by landscaping may need less.
Ceiling Height
The chart assumes 2.5-2.8 meter ceilings. Lofts, converted shophouses, and older buildings with 3.5+ meter ceilings have significantly more air volume to cool. Add 15-20% per extra half-meter of ceiling height.
Number of People
Each person in a room generates about 400-600 BTU of heat. A home office used by one person needs less cooling than a living room where the family of four gathers. For rooms regularly occupied by more than 3-4 people, go up one BTU level.
Heat-Generating Equipment
A kitchen adjacent to the living area, a room full of computers, or a space with multiple monitors and electronics all add heat load. If significant heat sources are present, increase your BTU requirement by 10-20%.
Common Sizing Mistakes
Mistake 1: Bigger is Always Better
Oversized aircons are surprisingly common and problematic. A unit too large for the room cools the air quickly, then shuts off. The room warms up, the unit restarts. This short-cycling means the compressor wears out faster, the room temperature swings uncomfortably, humidity is not properly removed, and electricity is wasted. Proper sizing is always better than oversizing.
Mistake 2: Using Non-Bangkok Guidelines
BTU calculators designed for temperate climates underestimate what Bangkok needs. When the outdoor temperature is consistently 33-38 degrees, your aircon works much harder than in a place where it is 28 degrees outside. Always use Bangkok-specific recommendations or add 10-15% to generic calculators.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Room Layout
An L-shaped room or a room with an alcove may need a larger unit than a simple square room of the same area, because air distribution is uneven. In some cases, two smaller units are better than one large one.
When in Doubt, Ask a Professional
